One of Brooke’s greatest passions was to help other kids who were in the hospital and also raising awareness and funds for pediatric cancer research, especially for NB research.

Soon after Brooke was diagnosed, she came up with an idea to collect toys for kids who had to be in the hospital. She knew firsthand how scary a trip to the hospital was and also how long and boring it could be. She started putting aside gifts that people had bought for her to give to our then local hospital in Salisbury. Soon our dining room was filled with toys!

During her years in treatment, we became involved with Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, started by Alex Scott who also had Neuroblastoma and wanted to raise money for pediatric cancer research so kids wouldn’t have to go through what she had. Alex raised more than 1 million dollars for research before her death at 8 years old. Brooke learned that even a young child could make a difference in the world and she was on her way to doing just that. The Brooke Mulford Foundation was officially founded when Brooke was about 6 years old with a goal of raising funds for research, providing toys for kids in the hospital and financially helping families living on the Eastern Shore who have a child battling cancer. Just weeks before moving to NJ in August 2014, Brooke’s dream became a reality and the 1st Brooke’s Toy Closet officially opened at Tidal Health Peninsula and quickly became a huge success thanks to the dedication of Denise Billing and the Tidal Health Foundation, as well as the ER and pediatric staff at the hospital and the overwhelming support of the community. Brooke was so happy to be able to give back to the community that did so much for her throughout her 8 ½ year journey with cancer.

Brooke’s long and inspiring battle ended on June 12th, 2017 but even though she is no longer here with us her legacy lives on and continues to help others. One year after Brooke went to heaven, a 2nd Brooke’s Toy Closet was opened at Virtua Hospital in Voorhees, NJ. A 3rds Brooke’s Toy Closet opened in March 2022 at Tidal Health Nanticoke in Seaford, DE. The Toy Closet was such a passion of Brooke’s and she loved hearing stories of children benefiting from it. She would be so thrilled that now there is one in 3 different states and that they have brought smiles to hundreds of children’s faces during otherwise scary and painful times.
